Dionis

Enjoy the less populated and more rural side of Nantucket.

Nantucket beach with sand, brown dunes and clapboard fence.

Named for Dionis Coffin, wife of Nantucket original proprietor Tristram Coffin, Dionis is nestled in the pines and natural grasslands, away from the more populated areas. Acres of accessible conservation lands are nearby, including the Conservation Foundation's Sanford Farm and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, an 86-acre wildlife preserve.

Location: Dionis is about 3 miles northwest of downtown Nantucket, along the north shore of the island. It’s located between the Cliff neighborhood and Madaket, making it a serene and less-developed part of the island.

Top Things to Do and See in Dionis

Dionis Beach: Dionis Beach is one of the highlights of the neighborhood and is known for its calm waters and wide sandy shoreline. Because it faces Nantucket Sound rather than the Atlantic Ocean, the waves are gentler, making it a popular spot for families with young children.

The beach is well-maintained and offers amenities like restrooms and lifeguards during the summer season. It’s great for swimming, beachcombing, and picnicking. Dionis Beach also provides beautiful views of the sunset over Nantucket Sound.

Kayaking and Paddle boarding: Since the waters off Dionis Beach are calmer than the Atlantic side, they’re ideal for kayaking and paddle boarding. You can rent equipment in town or bring your own to enjoy a peaceful day on the water.

Hiking and Nature Walks: Dionis is surrounded by conservation land and walking trails, making it a great area for nature lovers. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation, located nearby, offers beautiful walking trails and an opportunity to explore the island’s native flora and fauna. The foundation also hosts educational programs and guided walks.
